Course Description
This course presents an overview of the importance of sleep to the athlete, be they professional or amateur, and is the first in a series of courses on this topic. This presentation provides sleep practitioners with a review of the basics of the relationship between sports and sleep which affects all people, irrespective of their participation in sports and/or other athletic endeavors. More specifically, practitioners will learn how poor sleep has a negative effect in performance, or worse, a result in potential injury.
The second in this series will include a podcast containing a discussion of real-life experiences of a sleep physician (and athlete) and a polysomnography technician, both with 35 years of combined experience in sleep medicine.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon completion, the learner will be able to:
- Understand the unique sleep needs of the athlete
- Be able to describe the negative effects of poor sleep and sleep deprivation, including poor performance and injury.
- Understand and be able to describe sleep disturbances encountered by athletes.
