Course Description
Changes in the biological life cycles, extreme hormonal changes and with advancing age, women are at an increased risk for sleep disturbances such as insomnia, poor sleep quality, and sleep deprivation, as well as sleep disorders such as Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS). Depression, and various mood and anxiety-related disorders may also be experienced with the changes(1). There is emerging evidence that menopause-associated hormone loss contributes to this elevated risk of sleep disorders, but age is also an important factor(2).
This course is written as a broad overview of the relationship between menopause and sleep disorders. It provides clarity in the relationship of the stages of menopause and the myriads of physiological and anatomical changes to a woman’s body. The course describes the effects of menopausal changes on sleep as well as the potential reasons for their effect on sleep.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon completion, the learner will be able to:
- Understand physiological changes during menopause
- Describe the stages of reproductive aging
- Describe the most important factors in the sleep/menopausal relationship.
