DME Compliance Course List

This course will discuss the definitions of Fraud and Abuse.  The course will distinguish the differences and provide examples of each as well as discuss the potential consequence if being found guilty.  A guide to creating an Organizational Culture of Compliance is provided based upon the recommendations by the Office of Inspector General.  State Law and Regulation as well as the expectations of Accrediting Organizations for Sleep and DME are presented and the course concludes with a best practice approach to managing a compliant organization.

This course introduces the reader to the US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration Division Standards for Bloodborne pathogens.  Additional recommendations developed by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) are incorporated for added understanding of the importance to plan and manage the work environment to protect workers and visitors.  Relevant pathogens are described with greater emphasis placed on the methods to prevent transmission vectors.  As well, other pathogens such as tuberculosis (TB), Hepatitis, Coronavirus and Influenza, which contribute to additional health risks for employees working in a healthcare environment, will be reviewed.  The integration of universal precautions as defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Standards is described as the simplest means of protecting workers from these pathogens.

This course discusses the prevalence of elder abuse in the United States. Some federal and industry definitions are discussed, and specific categories of abuse are revealed. This course includes signs and symptoms that may indicate elder abuse and/or neglect and methods that individuals employed in the health care industry may use to prevent elder abuse and/or neglect.

A basic understanding of proper infection control practices is essential in protecting the safety of patients and staff alike. Success depends on the knowledge of good practice as well as its effective implementation. It is not enough just to apply good practices; we must also measure processes and outcomes to truly understand whether our plans and their execution have any merit. Measuring effective outcomes for our patients is an expectation. Staff education coupled with the implementation of good practice and outcomes-based measurement will generate a successful infection prevention and control program.

This course provides healthcare providers and professionals with a general introduction to crime in the United States, including the types of crime and frequency of occurrence. This course also examines typical perpetrators of criminal acts, their motivations, their thought processes and selected methods employed in choosing potential victims.  This course is designed to assist the healthcare provider in identifying potential criminals and criminal acts that may pose threats to staff and other patients in a sleep lab environment and/or in their residence. This is especially significant since many home care activities are conducted in uncontrolled environments, in a patient’s residence, or during odd and irregular hours.

This course describes those basic human factors that contribute to sexual harassment. Additionally, it provides the learner with guidelines to follow which will assist any individual in avoiding situations that may be perceived as sexual harassment. Lastly, the course discusses the effects that this type of undignified and illegal behavior can have on a workplace.

This course is an introduction to the legislation – The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).  The information in this course is taken from Federal web sites describing the differences between HIPAA Privacy and Security, regulatory standards to define compliance with HIPAA, and the healthcare works it impacts.  Information of how to prevent disclosure of private healthcare information and the appropriate steps to implement when a violation occurs with subsequent fines penalties are discussed.

As our nation becomes more diverse, so do the patient populations served by our nation’s health care systems. There is general agreement among governments, private social services, religious entities, and health care leaders that patient care and services are improved when cultural sensitivity is applied in those warranted circumstances.  The scope and quality of the provision of health care should never vary because of the populations served.

• To explore problems created by growing diverse populations encountered by health care providers.
• To provide plans and solutions that address diverse cultures served by those employed in the healthcare industry.

This course provides the participant with a basic understanding of suspected abuse and neglect towards children.  US Federal definitions are used as a guide to discuss signs and symptoms that may indicate that abuse and neglect has occurred or is ongoing. Additionally, methods are discussed to help the reader understand how to help prevent child abuse and/or neglect.
